Martin Freeman To Play Dutch Painter Rembrandt
First Vermeer, now Rembrandt.
The latest artist to be imagined on film will be Dutch painter Rembrandt van Rijn, says the Hollywood Reporter. Director Peter Greenaway will begin shooting Nightwatching next month, with British actor Martin Freeman set to star. The movie also features Sarah Polley and Minnie Driver.
The plot will focus on the creation of “The Nightwatch,” one of Rembrandt’s most famous paintings. Filming will take place in the Netherlands, Poland and Wales, on a budget of about $7.5 million.
At least 1.5 million tourists are expected to visit the Netherlands to celebrate the 400th birthday of Rembrandt this year. Nightwatching is also linked to an exhibition on Rembrandt that Greenaway is preparing for the Amsterdam Rijksmuseum.
