Surprising nobody, Brokeback Mountain won the top prize given to a movie by the The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation on Monday.

GLAAD, a leading gay organization, held a ceremony to honour mainstream media for inclusion of the gay community.

“Brokeback Mountain has helped to change the world,” director Ang Lee said while accepting the award. “And it is such a privilege and honour to have joined you, and all the people all over the world, who struggle for compassion and equality.”

Brokeback Mountain, which was one of the favourites to win an Oscar, stars Heath Ledger, Jake Gyllenhaal as two gay cowboys.

Newsweek was awarded for its magazine reporting, while Oprah Winfrey received recognition for an episode on coming out.

Melissa Ethridge was named Best Music Artist.
