When a Stranger Calls rang in big bucks at the box office this weekend, grabbing first place with $22 million.

Sunday?s Super Bowl meant that the majority of moviegoers were women. Stranger, a babysitter-in-danger remake of a 1979 slasher flick, drew an audience that was 55 per cent female.

The only other film to debut in the top 10 this week was the romantic comedy Something New, starring Sanaa Lathan and Simon Baker. It grossed $5 million to land in seventh place.

The overall box office is down seven per cent from last year and 18 per cent from last weekend, despite Tuesday?s Academy Award nominations.

Brokeback Mountain, the lone film nominated for the Best Picture Oscar in the top 10, moved from sixth to fourth place with $5.3 million.
