It’s true that horror movies and family films have the biggest built-in audience at the box office.

Reuters reports that Sunday studio estimates put Underworld: Evolution at the head of the pack. The R-rated action-horror movie came in at $27.6 million. Sony said it would have been happy if the film had matched the debut of the original movie, which it did, and then a bit more.

The animated fairy tale Hoodwinked held steady at No. 2 with $11.1 million. Last weekend’s champion, basketball drama Glory Road, fell to No. 3 with $9.1 million. Behind it is the Queen Latifah dramedy Last Holiday.

After winning Best Drama at the Golden Globes, Brokeback Mountain jumped four places to No. 5 with $7.8 million, an increase of 35 per cent over last week. According to its distributor Focus Features, “The Golden Globes gave more validation and importance to the film, and the box office shows it. It’s created a whole new level of momentum.”

Good news for King Kong: Although it fell out of the Top 10, it finally passed its $207 million production budget. Peter Jackson’s bosses can breathe a little easier. The total stands at $209.8 million after six weekends.
