Microsoft and MTV are partnering up on a new online music venture to compete with Apple’s iTunes store. The service, called Urge, will include over 2 million songs, music videos and tv shows.
According to Playlist, the service will offer both a pay per song model and a monthly subscription model. The service is set to launch in early 2006.
Songs purchased from Urge will not be compatible with Apple’s iPod as they will use the Windows Media format. MTV is hoping to use its large TV network access and teen following to remove Apple from the current lead in online music downloads.
More information will be available at next years Consumer Electronic Show in Las Vegas.
