The Grammy nominations were announced this morning in Los Angeles, and included the expected, a surprise, and a snub.
First the expected: Mariah Carey, who has the second highest selling album of the year, was nominated for eight awards, which tied her with Kanye West for the most nominations received this year.
Now the surprise: John Legend, Kanye’s prot?g? of sorts, also received eight nominations, for his debut album.
Carey’s “comeback album,” “The Emancipation of Mimi,” earned her an album of the year nomination. She’ll compete against Paul McCartney, Gwen Stefani, U2 and Kanye West in that category.
Carey and West will also battle for the other most coveted trophy, Record of the Year. The Gorillaz, Green Day, and Stefani are also nominated in that category.
And here’s another surprise: Coldplay received just three nominations, none in the general fields like Best Album or Best Song. They were nominated for Best Rock Group Performance, Best Rock Song and Best Rock Album.
Legend will battle Ciara, Fall Out Boy, Keane and SugarLand for Best New Artist. Legend is also up for Song of the Year and a slew of R&B awards.
The Grammys will be handed out in L.A. on February 8.
