Harry Potter Stays No. 1 At Box Office
Harry Potter continued to work his magic this weekend, earning $54.9 million to stay No. 1 at the box office.
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire has grossed $81.3 million since Wednesday to lift its total earnings to $201.1 million.
In second place once again was Walk the Line, the Johnny Cash biopic starring Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon, which took in $19.7 million to lift its total earnings to $54.7 million.
This past Thanksgiving weekend in the U.S. was a boost for the slumping box office, which has had attendance down eight per cent from last year.
“You’ve got to look at Harry Potter as being the saviour of the box office right now,” said Paul Dergarabedian, president of box-office tracker Exhibitor Relations.
The Dennis Quaid-Rene Russo family film Yours, Mine & Ours landed in third place with $17.5 million to lead the new releases this weekend.
In fourth and fifth place respectively was Chicken Little with $12.4 million and Rent, the adaptation of the famous Broadway musical, with $10.7 million.
Ryan Reynold?s romantic comedy Just Friends earned $9.3 million to land in sixth place, while R&B singer Usher?s mob romance In the Mix was No. 9 with $4.5 million.
John Cusack and Billy Bob Thornton?s crime flick The Ice Harvest made a weak showing at tenth place with only $3.7 million.
