Brian Herzlinger has a lot of balls.
The 27-year-old from New Jersey, trying and failing to make a living in Hollywood, came up with an idea: spend the $1100 he won on a game show on trying to get a date with Drew Barrymore, his lifelong crush.
He used a friend’s credit card to buy a video camera from a major retail chain. According to their return policy, he could use the camera for 30 days and return it for a full refund. He documented his every move along the way and the result is a hilarious and cute documentary, “My Date With Drew,” on DVD Tuesday.
Does he get the date? I won’t ruin the ending, but I will say that it doesn’t really matter. His adventure along the way is far better than some scripted Hollywood movies.
We see Herzlinger as he creates a fake VIP pass into an afterparty for one of Barrymore’s movies. We see him as he hits rock bottom financially and must borrow money from his parents (an entertaining adventure in itself). We see him interview some of her friends like Corey Feldman as he tries to get inches closer to the A-list actress.
He learns more about himself as a result of his conquest; the audience learns nothing. But that doesn’t matter because they’re certainly entertained.
So why does he have a lot of balls? Not only did he risk being evicted from his house at an attempt to meet Barrymore, but he holds nothing back. Come on, it takes guts for a 27-year-old dude to admit he has a crush on someone, especially if you joined their fan club when you were in elementary school.
The bonus features are minimal but worth watching. However, if I tell you what the main feature is, I’ll spoil the film’s ending. So just pick up the movie and have a good time.
