TV Column: MuchOnDemand versus TRL: Who does it better?

Posted by andPOP Staff on November 9th, 2005

Combine live music, celebrity interviews, pre-teen audience members screeching their lungs out and perenially-perky and super-annoying hosts and you have the makings of live music show.

Throw in a little “witty” banter, video premiers and flashy wardrobe and you’re all set. While MuchMusic has essentially copied MTV’s Total Request Live with it’s own show MuchOnDemand, are the shows really that similar?

Upon intense research (translation: mindless hours of watching both shows), I have come to a conclusion: if you’re above the age of 14, neither show is particularly appealing.

Let’s start with MuchOnDemand.

The good: it’s not as scripted as it’s American counterpart, but that can also be a very, very bad thing (I’ll talk about that later). There is more audience interaction and videos are actually played in their entirety. Prizes are fun and almost daily and guests are both local and international celebs. Hosts Matte and Leah seem to genuinely be friends and that comes off on TV, very real. Requesting videos is also very easy and they actually play what you want to see!

The bad: without a set script guiding hosts Matte and Leah along the entire hour, Leah is left to mug for the camera in her “look at me I’m so cute and perky” kind of way. It really was cute at the beginning but on a daily basis? Not so much. Another bad thing, meaningless conversations between the hosts and the floor director/camera person/random person off camera. The audience doesn’t get the inside jokes, we don’t know who or what you are talking about and no one is laughing except for you. Please, no more of that.

Now on the TRL.

The good: cooler guests from varying backgrounds. More TV stars, and often multiple guests on the same show. Most video premiers on TRL happen before they do on almost all other stations, including MuchMusic, though it’s no fault of the Canadian Network. The show is an MTV staple, and the go-to place for new videos and fun inerviews.

The bad: the studio it’s filmed in, in the middle of Times Square in New York looks like it can’t be any more than 15 square feet total. It’s so crammed with fans, I swear I get claustrophobic just watching it on TV! Is that really safe? How many people really need to be there? Besides the set, the show has an infuriating habit of not showing entire videos. Someone, anyone, please explain this to me. What is the point of watching a video if I’m not going to see the last minute of it? I mean really!

Though the Canadian show doesn’t have the flash and history of its American counterpart, if I had to pick between the two, I pick MuchOnDemand.

While Leah gets annoying very fast and some shows just drag on, it’s much more “real” and accessible to the live audience and the not-so-cool people (kind of like me) who are forced to watch the action unfold from home.
