Saw II Makes a Killing
Saw II reigned supreme this weekend, slaughtering The Legend of Zorro for top spot at the box office.
The gruesome terror flick, the sequel to last year’s relatively successful Saw, earned $30.5 million (U.S.), well above industry expectations in the $20 million range.
The Legend of Zorro, which re-unites Antonio Banderas and Catherine Zeta-Jones, came in second place with $16.5 million. The previous Zorro film debuted with $22 million and finished with $94 million.
Two other films joined the box office fray this weekend with underwhelming results. The Meryl Streep and Uma Thurman comedy Prime came in third with modest earnings of $6.4 million, while Nicholas Cage’s The Weather Man landed in sixth with $4.2 million.
Rounding out the top five were Dreamer: Inspired By a True Story, which was No. 4 with $6.3 million, and Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit, which was No. 5 with $4.4 million.
