The Week That Was in the NHL
Standings and news from around the League for the week of October 10-17.
- The Ottawa Senators continued their winning streak this week, as they are the only undefeated team in the Eastern Conference. Goaltender Dominik Hasek earned his 300th NHL win as he backstopped the Sens to a 5-1 win over the Boston Bruins. The only other undefeated team in the League are the Nashville Predators in the West.
- Senators forward Martin Havlat has been suspended for 5 games for kicking Boston Bruins’ player Hal Gill in the groin during Saturday’s game. Havlat was no penalized on the play and Gill was not injured. However, this is the second kicking incident involving Havlat; he was suspended for two games in the 2003-04 season for kicking defenceman Eric Carins.
- Leading rookie scorer Sidney Crosby and his Pittsburgh Penguins are still looking for their first win of the season, they are the only winless team in the League. Crosby has 2 goals and 6 assists for 8 points.
- Atlanta Thrashers defenseman Andy Sutton has been suspended for 4 games following Friday?s game vs. the Maple Leafs. Sutton drove Leafs? forward Darcy Tucker?s head into the boards and was ejected from the game for attempting to injure. Tucker received 20 stitches to close up the wound on his forehead.
- Brett Hull of the Phoenix Coyotes announced his retirement Saturday. The 41-
year old veteran decided to hang up his skates claiming he was not the same player he was at the age of 30 or 35. Hull?s father, Hall of Famer, Bobby Hull un-
retired his number 9 last week so his son could wear it this season. In five games this season, Hull collected one assist and was a minus-3. Hull raised the Stanley
Cup twice in his 20 year career [in 1999 with Dallas and in 2002 with Detroit.]
Hull is currently the third highest goal scorer in NHL history, scoring 741 goals
and amassed 1,391 points.

And for all of you tallying points at home, remember an overtime (OT) loss [whether in the 5-minutes of 4-on-4 or the shootout] the losing team will receive 1 point, but the game is counted as an OT loss. The winning team receives 2 points and the game is counted as a win. As always, a loss in regulation time results in no points being awarded and the game is slotted under the “losses” column.
