Movie Column: Posessed by Evil Demons

Posted by andPOP Staff on September 11th, 2005

For anyone who expected me to be writing about the Toronto International Film Festival this week, I will not disappoint. In fact, I will tell you exactly what I think about it.

I hate the Toronto International Film Festival.

Every year, it swoops into Toronto, and for two weeks, I have to hear about star sightings, party hotspots, and red carpet shenanigans.

Moreover, since I attend Ryerson University (where screenings are held,) I get to walk past the line of ticket holders which stretches a for almost two blocks, and the rush tickets line, which is just as long, even though most of them usually don?t get in.

The festival has been going on for three days, and already I?ve seen Atom Egoyan in a restaurant on Queen Street, and had to wade through a mob of screaming girls who wanted to see Orlando Bloom and Much Music, (he?s just as hot in real life as he is in his movies!)

I guess what really pisses me off about the TIFF is that it doesn?t really seem to be about the movies.

As I see it, it?s 33 per cent about the movies, 33 per cent about the stars, and 33 per cent about making Toronto feel like Hollywood for a week ? complete with stretch hummers, red carpets, and plenty of superficial movie types.

So, while I do really love 33 per cent of it, I still hate well over half of it.

It has been argued recently (by Roger Ebert, among others) that the TIFF is the most important film festival in the world, or at very least, the second most important after Cannes.

Based on the evidence, I would be inclined to agree.

Eighty-four per cent of the films screened at the TIFF this year will be World, International, or North American Premiers.

Moreover, industry members tout it as a great way to test market their films on enthusiastic cinephiles

However, as a moviegoer, I hate to feel like a third class citizen (behind the industry types and the press.)

Between the long lines and the expensive ticket prices, I often feel that letting me see the movies is really more of an afterthought, once the important people are taken care of.

Don?t get me wrong; in general, I love film festivals.
I do my best to check out the myriad of other, small festivals that Toronto plays host to (the Spanish language film festival, and the Hot Docs Documentary film festival are usually excellent.).

At these, you show up at the door, usually pay less than $10, and see a movie that you probably can?t see anywhere else.

On the other hand, with the TIFF as the launching pad/test audience for a lot of major Hollywood movies, and most of the big Oscar contenders, I will be able to see the same movies cheaper, and with less hassle, if I just wait patiently for them to come out in wide release.

Now if you want to see a movie that?s not at the TIFF (or you?re fortunate enough to live somewhere other than Toronto for the next week or two) check out The Exorcism of Emily Rose.

Based on a true story, Emily Rose is about a church-sanctioned exorcism that was performed a number of years ago.

The exorcism proved fatal, and the film centres on the subsequent court case, with various flashbacks to the possession and exorcism.

Despite what the trailers would have you believe, the film is really more of a suspense/thriller than an outright horror flick. There are definitely scary parts, but that really isn?t the focus of the film.

It didn?t blow me away; Laura Linney wasn?t anything special to watch, and the script was mediocre and one-sided.

That being said, there are a few scenes that will make you want to sleep with the lights on, and you?ll never look at 3:00 a.m. the same way again.

And if you do end up going to a festival film this week, do me one favour.

Don?t tell me that the movie star you saw was shorter in person.

Atom Egoyan was shorter in person.

Orlando Bloom was a bit shorter than I expected Legolas to be.

I already know that Tom Cruise is shorter in person, despite the fact that I?ve never met him.

I?m beginning to believe that they?re all shorter in person.
