The music of the Barenaked Ladies took Canadian Idol by storm this Tuesday night. Their distinct style and impressive achievements are a testament to their talent. The Ladies helped each of the three remaining Idols to select and polish two of their songs. They watched proudly from the audience, giving standing ovations and cheering on Melissa, Rex, and Aaron as they tried their best to impress the judges and Canada.
First up was Rex with “Brian Wilson.” Rex is normally very stiff but this Tuesday he was moving around and looked like he was having a great time. He sounded excellent and really impressed the judges. Jake said, “That was the most fluid and the most musical I’ve ever heard you sing.” Zack added, “I think you’re going to make some good records bro.”
Aaron was next, singing “Break Your Heart.” Aaron did an outstanding job on this song. He was so emotional and his voice was powerful yet expressive. Farley told Aaron, “You’re the best singer left in this competition hands down.” Jake said, “When you blew up those notes there, it blew us back in our seats.”
Third to sing was Melissa with “The Old Apartment.” She was flawless in her vocals and in her performance. Melissa looked great and brought her own style to the song. Sass told Melissa, “You absolutely pulled it off,” and Farley added, “You’re wonderful to watch sing.”
The second half of the show started with Rex singing “Call and Answer.” This was a weak performance. Rex looked uncomfortable and sounded off, especially in the lower parts of the song. Zack said, “Your radical inability to sing is going to come back to haunt you tonight.” Jake had some words of encouragement, telling Rex, “You pulled it off in the end.”
Aaron’s second song was “Enid.” He was very lively this time around, jumping through the audience and working the camera. He had fun and sounded pretty good, but the judges were divided. Zack said, “I think you’re maybe back in trouble.” However, Jake told Aaron, “You really took the spirit of what [the song] was meant to be.”
Last to sing was Melissa with “When I Fall.” Melissa sang fabulously again. She proved her desire and ability to win the competition with her consistency this week. Sass complimented Melissa, saying, “I would catch you if you fell but I don’t think you will.” Jake added, “I thought that was such a mature professional performance.”
It is very difficult to predict who will be going home this week since the three remaining competitors are all good singers and popular with the show’s fans. I think Aaron may be eliminated simply because he doesn’t seem to be the typical “Idol.” However, Rex’s weak performance may be dangerous for him this week. Who will go home and who will stay to compete in the final? Tune in Wednesday night to find out!
