Labour Day weekend is usually a slow time for Hollywood, and Hurricane Katrina added an unwelcome variable to moviegoing habits. Despite this, 20th Century Fox’s Transporter 2 delivered a surprisingly big package and secured the box office crown, setting a record in the process.
Hollywood Reporter estimates that the action sequel debuted at $20.3 million, which is more than twice as much as The Transporter made on its opening weekend in October 2002. This is also a record opening for the Labour Day period, beating the previous high of $18.4 million held by Jeepers Creepers 2 in 2003.
Jason Statham, who has his own cult following, returns as ex-Special Forces operative Frank Martin, whom I’ve heard described as an anti-Bond. In just four days, Transporter 2 nearly matched the total domestic gross of the original movie. (The Transporter opened to $9 million before going on to gross $25 million.)
“People love the character,” said Bert Livingston, a distribution executive for 20th Century Fox. “It’s escapism, and with all the tragedy going on in New Orleans, I think people want to get away and lose themselves for an hour and a half.”
The 40-Year-Old Virgin lost his two-week hold on the #1 spot, taking in roughly $16.6 million. In third place is The Constant Gardener, a critically acclaimed suspense thriller, with $10.8 million, a solid opening given that it played in nearly 2,000 fewer theatres than Transporter 2.
Focus Features was wise to pull The Constant Gardener from its earlier August 26 opening, where it would have competed directly against The Brothers Grimm, splitting the target audience. Gardener was scheduled for a Wednesday opening instead, and it grossed about $1 million on its opening day.
The other wide releases of the weekend were end-of-summer leftovers that both critics and audiences disdained.
Underclassman, a comedy starring Nick Cannon as a cop who goes undercover at a high school to investigate a murder, flopped with just about $3.1 million. A Sound of Thunder, an adaptation of Ray Bradbury’s sci-fi story about time travelers, did even worse at $1.2 million.
This has been Hollywood’s worst summer for movie attendance since 1997, but it ended on a reasonably positive note. Overall revenues were up 16% from Labour Day weekend last year.
