Canadian Idol: It’s Tough to ‘Guess Who’ Will Be Canada’s Top Four
This Tuesday the Idols paid tribute to one of Canada’s greatest rock bands- The Guess Who. When asked about the band, Zack Werner stood up and began to rock out on his guitar to “American Woman.” It is just that type of passion that kept the audience on their feet and the panel of judges bursting with compliments throughout the performances of the evening.
First to sing was Rex Goudie with “No Sugar Tonight.” Rex is consistently ready and committed to the pieces of music he chooses. This Tuesday was no different. Rex had the crowd clapping and on their feet singing along. Sass loved the performance and said, “That was amazingly good.” Zack and Farley thought Rex was a bit stiff but Rex explained that he was suffering from a bad back. Zack said Rex’s charisma carries him through.
Casey LeBlanc was next up, singing “Timeless Love.” Casey looked very relaxed and her tone was impeccable. She was impressive, which was surprising since her string of weak performances near the beginning of the competition. However it is clear that Casey is ready to compete and become a serious part of this competition. While Zack found the song a little boring, the other judges gave Casey some credit. Farley said, “That song was perfect for your voice,” and Jake added, “By far your best performance. You’re coming into your own.”
Third up was Suzi Rawn with “American Woman.” I thought this performance was one of her weaker ones. The range of the song was rather small, and the arrangement just did not showcase Suzi’s voice the way it should have. The performance was bold as usual, but nothing special. The judges were divided over this one. Zack told Suzi, “It’s a whole lot of nothing and I don’t feel like you’re committed,” while Jake said, “You’re smart and you know what you’re doing.”
“My Own Way to Rock” was Melissa O’Neil’s Guess Who choice. This song was not the best choice for Melissa. It left her little opportunity to shine. There wasn’t enough power or conviction in Melissa’s voice, which is very rare for this talented performer. Zack said, “To be honest, between that outfit and horrible song choice, you’ll be lucky to survive this week.” Sass was the only judge with positive feedback, telling Melissa, “I think you’re an Idol.”
Last but certainly not least was Aaron Walpole with “These Eyes.” Canada didn’t have to guess who the top idol was this Tuesday night. Aaron Walpole dominated the group with his smashing performance. He started the song softly and emotionally. From his first few notes, it was clear that he would ace this performance and that’s exactly what Aaron did. He sang like he meant every word, but he did it without the theatrics. His voice sounded awesome and Farley even extended a standing ovation to Aaron as he wrapped up his song. Jake said, “You nailed it. You couldn’t have done it better.” Zack topped all of the evening’s comments by standing up to clap when given his chance to comment. He told Aaron, “As the only Winnipegger in the house, that was well done.”
The Final Five will become the Fab Four this Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. Who will be “Undun” this week? Tune in to see how Canada voted.
