What was supposed to be a joyous birthday celebration turned out to be a horseback riding disaster for Madonna.

The superstar, who turned 47 today, suffered several broken bones when she took a tumble off her horse at her country home outside of London on Tuesday afternoon.

Madonna was treated at Salisbury District Hospital for three cracked ribs, a broken collarbone, and a broken hand. She is now recovering at home.

The accident occurred at Ashcombe house, the 1,354-acre estate the singer shares with her husband, movie director Guy Ritchie. Madonna was riding with her assistant when she took the fall off a new horse she was not accustomed to. Her husband took her to the hospital.

Madonna?s two children, Rocco and Lourdes, were at home and were not present at the time. The whole family had gone to the country to celebrate her big day.

The star?s spokesperson, Liz Rosenberg, told reporters in New York that horseback riding is a new hobby for Madonna, who picked up the sport ?about four or five months ago.?
