As a child, Jeff DaRosa grew up listening to Bob Marley.
Now, as the bass player and songwriter for the New York Trio The Exit, he has become a positive musical role model for others.
However, strong influences are not the only aspects that have propelled The Exit to success.
The band’s second album, “Home for an Island,” which features hits like “Don’t Push” and “Soldier,” is going to be re-released in the fall.
After touring for more than two years, this is a band whose music reflects true honesty as well as personal growth.
A good example is the chorus from “Don’t Push,” which says: Everybody gotta do something right/If you find love, hold on tight/don’t push.
The band members’ strong personalities are directly evident from their work.
Their songs have clear, genuine meaning and spread the word of optimism. The music itself is a blend of their talents; rock and roll with a smooth reggae edge, they are a band without genre.
How do they do it?
According to DaRosa, the secret to creating good music is change.
“After all,” he tells andPOP in an interview last week, “would you want to listen to the same things all the time?”
He and his bandmates, guitarist and vocalist Ben Brewer and one-named drummer Gunnar, formed The Exit in 2000. A year later, the release of their debut album, “New Beat,” took the guys on the road.
DaRosa sometimes gets stage fright, but he says that’s not a negative.
“It’s a good nervous. I think that makes me play better.”
More recently, the group just finished recording the video for “Don’t Push” in Los Angeles, where DaRosa says the band was able to do what they love most: play music for 10 hours a day in a new city.
As for the future, the rest is uncertain.
“I don’t know how old I’ll get,” said DaRosa, “but I’ll still be playing my guitar in flip flops.”
