Actress Angelina Jolie has been awarded Cambodian citizenship for her continued environmental and conservational contributions to the country.

King Norodom Sihamoni signed a royal decree approving the citizenship on July 31, said Sok Sam Oeun, deputy director of the international relations department at Cambodia’s Council of Ministers.

“The King signed the legal papers and that means she now has Cambodian citizenship,” Toun Siphan, director of the government’s international relation department, confirmed to Reuters on Thursday.

The king is working with contacts in Cambodia to notify Jolie, 30, of her new citizenship.

Jolie, who adopted her son, Maddox, from Cambodia in 2002, has often spoken of her love for the poverty-stricken country.

“When I went to Cambodia something felt like home to me,” she has said.

Jolie recently pledged $5 million over the next 15 years to set up a wildlife sanctuary in the northwestern province of Battambang, where she has also bought a home.
