It’s a dream come true for Sidney Crosby.
Crosby’s dream of playing in the National Hockey League officially became a reality today in Ottawa as the 17-year old from Cole Harbour, N.S., was selected first overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins.
The scaled down version of the NHL Entry Draft capped off a busy week for NHL clubs, general managers and players as preparations are being made to kick-start the 2005-06 season on Oct. 5.
After winning the coveted number one position in the first ever draft lottery held last week, there was no doubt the Penguins would call Sidney Crosby?s name.
The Magnificent One, Mario Lemieux accompanied Penguins? GM Craig Patrick and scouting staff for the team up to the podium to welcome Crosby to the NHL. Lemieux is looking forward to having Crosby a member of the Penguins organization and has even offered Sidney a room in his Pittsburgh mansion for a year or two.
Following the draft lottery, ticket sales in the Steel City began soaring for the up-coming season. Earning the right to draft Crosby is indeed a lottery win for the lowly NHL franchise that has struggled both on and off the ice in recent years.
After being drafted first overall in 1984 by the Pens, Lemieux was able to save the Pittsburgh Penguins on many occasions by leading the team to two consecutive Stanley Cup victories in 1991 and 1992 and rescuing the club from bankruptcy in 1999 when he became majority owner, chairman of the board and CEO of the Penguins.
There are high expectations being put on Crosby, the new saviour of the franchise to perform.
With this newfound life given to the Penguins organization, all of a sudden Pittsburgh has become a desirable hockey market for many of the hundred free agents.
Lemieux has mentioned the team will be looking to add a few skilled players to the roster to enhance Crosby?s talents. Rumours are circling that unrestricted free agent Alex Kovalev may be back in Pittsburgh, the city that he played his best hockey. Some speculation arose earlier this week that Toronto Maple Leafs tough guy Tie Domi may be on his way to Pittsburgh as well to serve as more of a bodyguard for young Sidney.
The addition of Crosby also brings along an exciting possibility to get Evgeni Malkin, the team?s first-round pick in 2004, signed so that he and Crosby can begin their NHL journeys together.
It is expected Sid the Kid will play his first NHL game Oct. 5 when the Penguins play the Devils in New Jersey. Oct. 5 also happens to be Lemieux?s 40th birthday.
In a perfect hockey world on opening night, Sidney Crosby will be centering Pittsburgh?s top line along with Mario Lemieux and Mark Recchi as the Penguins begin their rebuilding process.
