Music Column: Eminem Is an Ass Like That
The first time I saw the latest Eminem music video, “Ass Like That,” I thought it was just another track where the rapper wastes his lyrical talents.
I’ve always considered Eminem to be one of the most gifted lyricists in the rap game, but I’ve also thought that his skills go to waste when he writes thoughtless songs like “Just Lose It.”
The latest starts, “The way you shake it, I can’t believe it/I ain’t never seen an ass like that/The way you move it, you make my pee pee go/Doing, doing, doing.”
He likes women’s behinds. There’s already been a song like that, and Sisqo has paid the price for poisoning our minds.
But as it is played more and more on music television and radio stations, I began to wonder if it was more of a social commentary.
Who else is in tune with pop culture enough to be able to mention Jojo (”I need a new boyfriend, hi my name is Jojo”), Hilary Duff (”Hilary Duff is not quite old enough so
I ain’t never seen a butt like that), Jessica Simpson and Gwen Stefani?
Eminem is clever, but so are the writers for the Jimmy Kimmel show and they’re not putting out music videos (although the puppet cast of Kimmel’s Crank Yankers appear in this video).
Slim Shady has demonstrated his enormous talents in tracks like “Stan.” It is introspective and earned him a well-deserved spot in the mainstream spotlight, leading to Grammys and will one day send him to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
So why does he do it? Why have lyrics such as “And do not treat me like a murderer, I just like to pee, pee, pee” and “So Gwen Stefani, will you pee pee on me please?”?
My hypothesis: because he can.
P. Diddy said he is considering changing his name again because he can. Tom Green humps dead cattle because he can. Donny Deutsch declares his outrage towards Tom Cruise almost daily on his CNBC show because he can.
Just like Eminem raps like an idiot because he can.
But he shouldn’t.
