Frantic Friday in the NHL; Crosby Set for Pittsburgh

Posted by andPOP Staff on July 22nd, 2005

It was a busy Friday afternoon for the National Hockey League today as the new collective bargaining agreement was officially ratified unanimously by the League’s board of governors 30-0 in New York City.

This vote comes one day after the NHL Players? Association voted 87 per cent in favour of the new CBA yesterday in Toronto.

Commissioner Gary Bettman was pleased to announce the lockout that wiped out the entire 2004-05 season was over.

Bettman was joined by director of player operations Colin Campbell and 17 year NHL veteran Brendan Shanahan during his press conference where the Commissioner introduced some new rules that will be in effect this fall.

Some of the new rules fans can look forward to seeing on the ice this season include: no centre red line, tag up offside, restriction on goaltenders handling the puck behind the net, moving the nets two feet back, reducing the neutral zone from 54 feet to 50 feet and a shoot out to determine tied games.

The schedule will also be slightly different from previous years; teams will play their divisional rivals eight times as oppose to six, play against other teams within their conference four times and play only 10 games against teams from the opposite conference. This format is intended to boast rivalries and intensify the passion felt by both the players and the fans.

As if the official ?Game On? announcement was not enough, the NHL held the draft lottery to determine the order in which the teams will be making their picks next Saturday in Ottawa. Through the luck of the draw, the Pittsburgh Penguins earned the right to draft ?the Next One? Sidney Crosby.

The off-season frenzy begins tomorrow as teams can begin buying out player contracts and qualifying restricted free agents. Unrestricted free agency begins August 1.
