Canadian Idol: It’s Back to Ottawa for Emily
Tension ran high on Wednesday night’s results show as the first Canadian Idol contestant of this season’s top ten was eliminated. Emily Vinette sang her farewell tune, unusually poised and prepared for what was most certainly the biggest disappointment of her young life.
A quick rendition of Bruce Cockburn’s “Lovers in a Dangerous Time” showcased the talents of this year’s top ten. Carrie Underwood, the newest American Idol, performed her single “Inside Your Heaven.” Despite encouraging record sales, and the double platinum award presented to her on Wednesday night, reports indicate that Underwood’s music is receiving minimal air time on American radio stations. Is the future as bleak for the talented stars of Canadian Idol? Will this year’s Canadian Idol receive the recognition of a singing sensation or be stalled at a single stab at stardom?
The Idols, unsure of what their future holds, nervously awaited their fate, exchanging little chatter and only occasional sighs of relief as names of the safe contestants were announced. Vinette found herself in the company of Daryl Brunt and surprise pick Melissa O’Neil, a judges’ favourite. Brunt looked close to tears throughout the entire process, but Vinette remained in control until the very last seconds of the broadcast. As the credits began to roll, she shed a few solemn tears, taking in the final moments of her Idol experience. Next week, the nine remaining singers tackle the brilliant works of Stevie Wonder.
