Sunday, July 10, 2005: day 298 of the NHL lockout and still no new collective bargaining agreement to report.
The National Hockey League and the Players’ Association continued their string of meetings this weekend, finalizing a new deal that could be announced as early as Monday. However, speculation is arising that the new agreement could be announced this Tuesday to coincide with the 300th day of the lockout.
Commissioner Gary Bettman has called a meeting of the NHL’s executive committee to meet in New York for an update on Monday, likely with the tentative deal in hand to outline the new CBA in detail.
It is understood that both sides have successfully negotiated all the major aspects required for a new CBA and now only the legalities remain. Pending last minute changes, when announced, the deal will be a six-year agreement that will include a salary cap with an upper spending limit [between $37million and $39 million US,] as well as a minimum spending limit [between $21 million and $24 million US.]
Other elements of the deal include: a 24 per cent roll back of all existing player contracts and qualifying offers, revenue sharing between the top 10 money-making teams with the bottom 10 teams, the age of unrestricted free agency to be gradually reduced from 31 years old to either 27 or 28 by the 2008 season, two-way salary arbitration rules, entry level contracts to be limited to $850,000 US a year; with a limitation on bonuses and participation in the 2006 Turin Olympics in February.
Whenever the deal is announced, it is only a tentative agreement until it is officially ratified. A board of governors meeting will then be called and all 30 owners will need to approve the deal. A vote of the 700-plus NHLPA membership will also be needed to ratify the agreement.
Player reaction to the deal has already begun, as many players are speaking out against PA boss Bob Goodnow.
After sitting out an entire season to solidify their anti-salary cap stance, many of the players feel the union let them down by in the end accepting a salary cap agreement.
Many of the angry NHLPA members will mostly likely vote for the deal when the time comes, but a nasty backlash is expected that may end with Goodnow’s head on the chopping block.
Following the cancellation of the 2004-05 season on Feb. 16, both sides have met 80 times in an effort to start the 2005-06 campaign on time.
The National Hockey League became the first professional sports league to cancel an entire season due to a labour dispute.
