Fantastic Four Debuts With $56 Million
Despite horrible reviews, “Fantastic Four” exceeded expectations and became the top movie over the weekend with a $56 million opening.
The movie’s distributor, 20th Century Fox, expected the film to debut with around $30 million.
“Fantastic Four” — which stars Jessica Alba and Chris Evans — is about four superheroes that were given their special powers like invisibility and combustibility after being in a space mission gone wrong.
This film adaptation of the Marvel comic characters cost a little over $100 million to make and director Tim Story is best known for directing “Barbershop.”
Critics are still less than impressed with this little movie that could.
“The most plastic of comic-to-movie adaptations yet,” said Newsday.
“Clumsy, cheesy and chintzy,” said Entertainment Weekly.
The thriller, “Dark Water” with Jennifer Connelly debuted in fourth place with $10.1 million.
Last week’s number one movie, “War of the Worlds,” is in second place with $31.3 million followed by “Batman Begins” with $10.2 million.
