Karen Kain, one of Canada’s most beloved prima ballerinas, returns to the National Ballet this summer as the new artistic director.

Announced at a press conference held in one of the dance studios, Kain, 54 is set to take over as artistic director at the National Ballet on July 1, according to the Canadian Press.

David Banks, chair of the ballet company’s board made the announcement. “I’m confident that what we’ve done as a process is right,” said Banks, adding he thought Kain was the perfect candidate. She replaces James Kudelka, who worked with the ballet for 9 years.

“I want to say first and foremost how honoured I am to be a part of the tradition that includes such remarkable people,” said Kain. “It makes me more aware than ever of the old adage about standing on the shoulders of giants.”

When asked what goals she had in mind for the company, she emphasized plans to strengthen classical work and traditions. “I hope to bring to my new role the same commitment, energy and sense of purpose that I brought to my role as principal dancer and artistic associate,” Kain added.

Her former dance partner, Rex Harrington also made an appearance, describing Kain as “world class.”

Despite retiring from the ballet in 1997, Kain has led a deeply accomplished life. After receiving honorary degrees from four Canadian universities- U of T, Trent, McMaster and York, she went on to become an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1976 and in 1998 was added to Canada’s Walk of Fame.

In 2002, Kain received the Governor General’s Performing arts award for Lifetime Achievement.
