Singer Elton John plans to marry longtime partner David Furnish, his publicist said Monday.

The couple plan to wed this year or in 2006.

John has said that he wants to hold a civil partnership ceremony in Windsor in December, though his publicist said it could be later.

Civil partnerships between same sex married couples will be legal in Britain starting December 5. Tax breaks are available to married couples, and John has indicated that the reason for the marriage is partly financial.

John, 58, has been partners with the Toronto-born Furnish, 42, for 11 years.
