Sir John Mills, the Oscar winning actor, died Saturday morning at age 97.

Mills was suffering from a chest infection for about a month.

Mills is best known for portraying the war hero in films made after the Second World War.

He appeared in such films as “The October Man,” “Scott of the Antarctic,” “Dunkirk” and “Ice Cold in Alex.”

His Oscar for best supporting actor though came for portraying a mute village idiot in 1971’s “Ryan’s Daughter.”

In his later years, he appeared with Madonna in “Who’s that Girl” in 1987, and in “Bright Young Things” in 2003, his final movie role.

He is survived by his second wife, Mary Hayley Bell.
