Robert Rodriguez is truly a revolutionary with his latest creation based on Frank Miller?s graphic comic novels, “Sin City”. This was a film that will transcend the way movies are made while its ingenious unconventional attitude and structure will act as a basis for future films to copy.
“Sin City” follows a scattered timeline of several storylines intertwining with one another while maintaining relationships between the characters; a guideline similar to that of “Pulp Fiction”. (Side note* Tarantino coincidently acted as cameo director alongside longtime friend and colleague Rodriguez) The darkness of the film, besides the obvious black and white projection, was unmatched by any other that I have seen. It was almost as if it was taken straight from the pages of Miller?s works.
What makes “Sin City” unique and special is that beyond the brutality of the characters underlay caring individuals consumed by confusion regarding their intentions. Through narration especially one can easily see a questionable morality that undoubtedly exists while the viewer and characters juggle between conscience and bloodthirsty redemption. It is a harsh world that we are exposed to, and that ?sinful? behavior that exists all around is the heartbeat of this movie. Truly it is a revenge-driven plot to see the least.
Fabulous performances by Mickey Rourke, Benicio Del Toro, Clive Owen and the exceptional Bruce Willis certainly enhanced ?Sin City? overall with clever wit and humor collectively combined with passion and drama. It is very alluring for it combines language, costumes, and even cars from the 50?s through today suggesting that it does not follow any specific time period. Robert Rodriguez will go down as a director that has forever changed the way we view films for the 21st century.
Tim?s Take: An extreme and intense spectacle of imagination and ingenuity make ?Sin City? a special cinematic achievement. Film noir often never escapes its own labeling; however in this case it not only goes beyond but astounds us with captivating dark imagery. Go see this film, you will never look at your watch and disappointment will not enter your mind.
