Back to the, err, difficult life for Nicole Richie.

Richie, the longtime best friend of hotel heiress Paris Hilton, will not be returning to the Fox Show “The Simple Life” for season 4.

Hilton says she wanted to “freshen up” the show with a new sidekick. Richie will be getting her own show anyway that follows her and fianc?e DJ AM (Adam Goldstein) around.

Turns out, it’s probably not Hilton’s decision. Fox has a contract with the girls for five seasons, and has the option to drop either or both of them at any time. Fox is the one considering replacing Richie.

Richie and Hilton have been in the tabloids lately, where reports say they are not such close friends anymore.

A rumoured replacement is Kimberly Stewart, son of rocker Rod Stewart.
