Sahara Leads Box Office
Matthew McConaughey can breathe a little easier. The actor was surely paying close attention to the box office numbers this week to see how his latest film, Sahara, did, because decent receipts could mean a guaranteed job for years to come.
McConaughey is Sahara will become a franchise, like Indiana Jones, and he could be playing the lead character in Sahara for the next few years, perhaps longer.
Sahara debuted in first in North America, bringing in $18.5 million. That was well ahead of projections, some as low as $10 million.
Sin City fell to the second spot, earning $14.1 million, adding to the grand total of $50.7 million over the past two weeks.
Fever Pitch, with Jimmy Fallon and Drew Barrymore, crashed into third place, brining in just $13 million. The movie is geared towards woman, yet has a baseball theme, which may appeal more to men.
Guess Who, starring Ashton Kutcher and Bernie Mac, is hanging around, earning enough to land in fourth.
Beauty Shop rounds out the top 5.
