Aaron Barrett has a message for Sum 41: you’re welcome.
Barrett, the frontman of Reel Big Fish, explains that his band can pack venues around the world. They bring unknown bands with to open for them, and quite often, those bands later explode, becoming more famous and selling more albums than Reel Big Fish.
Yet, the band don’t offer Reel Big Fish any gratitude; that is, except for Sum 41.
Sum 41 opened for the California-based ska band when nobody knew a thing about them. Since then, the Ajax foursome has blown up. On their recent European tour, they returned the favour by asking Reel Big Fish to open.
“Bands try to use our popularity,” Barrett tells andPOP. “We took Sum 41 out in the U.S. before anybody knew who they were and then they got really huge and they took us to Europe and we were playing in front of 5000 people a night. They’re like the only band who has gone on to have a hit and get famous and turn around and say, ‘hey guys, we’ll help you out too’.”
Barrett is reluctant (“Blink 182.”) to name any names (“New Found Glory.”) of bands who have not thanked them.
Because of their opening spot on the Sum 41 tour, Reel Big Fish built a large fanbase in Europe and continued touring their for months after.
Making albums is just an excuse for Reel Big Fish to keep touring, because that’s what the band loves to do. In fact, when they begin recording their albums, Barrett considers what the songs would sound like live.
“It’s backwards,” he says, since most bands don’t worry about how the songs will sound live until the album is done. “I usually think of how it will make people move and sing along and try to put that on the record.”
He hopes a song off “We?re Not Happy ?Til You?re Not Happy,” being released Tuesday (April 5), can get a considerable amount of radio spins, but realizes it might not happen. The band has really only had one big hit (“Sell Out” in 1997). On their last album, their old record label tried to get them to sound more radio-friendly, but he says the album ended up sounding forced.
“It was too much pressure,” he says. “It sounded stiff and too unnatural. You can feel that there is a fakeness to it.”
So when they started working on “We?re Not Happy ?Til You?re Not Happy” last year, Reel Big Fish decided to ignore the pressures of outside sources and just see what came out in the studio.
“With this album, we did it 100 per cent on our own and there’s more energy and we got to be ourselves more,” he says.
