Next week Sony plans to launch the much anticipated PlayStation Portable device in the United States.

Already experiencing very high demand in Japan, Sony has been delaying the launch so that it can prepare to meet the demand it expects to receive in the U.S.

The PSP not only plays video games, but allows users to watch movies, display pictures and listen to audio files. It’s going to go up against Apple’s popular iPod music player.

Support for Sony’s PSP player is also growing with Buena Vista Entertainment set to release several films in a special Universal Media Disc (UMD) format. These films include:

- National Treasure
- Pirates of the Caribbean
- Reign of Fire
- Kill Bill Vol. 1
- Hero

Sony’s UMD format can store almost three times the amount of data that can be stored on a CD.
