Mother of Accused in Jackson Trial is a Liar: Defense
Opening statements being this week in Santa Maria, California, for the Michael Jackson child molestation trial. “Bombshells” are expected to drop Monday morning when Jackson’s defense team will present evidence that the accuser’s mother has a history of making false accusations about sexual assaults and she has even tried to coach her son in the past to lie.
Judge Rodney Melville ruled that the defense will be allowed to bring up details of her past abuse charges in court.
They will try to make her seem not credible, and will try to paint the picture that the family is after the pop singer’s fortune.
Thomas Mesereau Jr., the lead defense attorney, argued in court Friday over whether or not he would be allowed to present details of a case the mother filed against JC Penney. The suit claimed security guards at a department store beat them, held the family against their will, and groped the mother after the accuser left the store without paying for merchandise.
The similarities to the Jackson case lie in the false imprisonment claim. The family alleges Jackson of holding them in his Neverland Ranch against their will, a similar claim they make against JC Penney.
Mesereau said Friday in court that the day after the JC Penney incident, the mother returned to the store to hug employees, according to the AP. She later filed the suit and even later added groping to the claims.
In the JC Penney case, the mother said she was never beaten by her husband, but when she was getting divorced, she claimed he had beaten her for years. This is where the defense will claim she is a liar. She was awarded a settlement of $150,000.
The mother had her son, who is a cancer survivor, ask celebrities for money, and then spent some of the money on cosmetic surgery, Mesereau said in court.
Deputy District Attorney Ron Zonen said none of this is relevant.
“This case is about whether a man who acknowledges sleeping with children slept with this child and what he did while he was sleeping with this child,” he said.
But Mesereau argued that it will show a pattern of lying, and the judge ultimately said it could be presented in court.
The first witness for the prosecution will be Martin Bashir, the journalist who made the documentary “Living with Michael Jackson,” which showed the boy with Jackson. The boy said in the documentary that he is allowed to sleep with Jackson, but made no reference to inappropriate sexual behaviour. Clips of the documentary will be shown in court to the jury.
Jackson is facing 10 counts. He has pleaded not guilty to all 10.
