Before the Simpsons began airing the current season late last year, executives at Fox revealed that during the season, they would reveal that one character is gay.

Many thought it would be Smithers. It is believed that Smithers is gay (he went on a gay cruise, he dreams about kissing his old wrinkly male boss, he’s just clearly gay), but he has never actually come out to say as much.

But Sunday night, the mystery was revealed. The first openly gay Simpsons character is none other than Marge’s sister, Patty Bouvier.

The episode revolved around Springfield legalizing gay marriage to boost tourism. Homer was granted a marriage licence (it took about a second to get one online) and built a wedding chapel in his garage.

Patty asked Homer to marry her and her new mistress, a golf pro. Marge, who was pro-gay marriage, was not fast to accept her sister’s new lifestyle. But then, she saw Patty’s wife-to-be in the washroom, with the lid up. Yup, she’s a dude.

Patty finds out, calls off the wedding, and thanks Marge for now accepting her lifestyle.

Next up, Smithers.
