11 Oscar Nominations for The Aviator
There is no expected “big winner” at the Oscars this year, but there is a clear leader as “The Aviator” picked up 11 Oscar Nominations.
Among the nominations for “The Aviator” are: best picture, best actor for Leonardo DiCaprio, best supporting actor for Alan Alda, best supporting actress for Cate Blanchett, and best directing.
The nomination list, announced Tuesday morning, also includes two nods for Jamie Foxx, who is up for best actor for his work in “Ray” and best supporting actor for his role in “Collateral.” It’s just the second time, Al Pacino being the first, that an actor received two nominations in one year. Also up for best actor are Don Cheadle (Hotel Rwanda), Johnny Depp (Finding Neverland), and Clint Eastwood (Million Dollar Baby) who is also challenging for best directing for the same film.
Besides “The Aviator,” those movies contending for best picture are: “Sideways,” “Ray,” “Finding Neverland,” and “Million Dollar Bay.”
Who’s not in contention for an award? Michael Moore and his movie “Fahrenheit 9/11.” Moore did not submit his film in the best documentary category (because he aired it on television, it was disqualified from that category anyway), instead trying his luck at best picture. No luck, Michael, as the academy did not deem the movie good enough to pick up a nomination.
The Oscars will be handed out February 27 in Los Angeles with Chris Rock hosting the show.
