Winning a Golden Globe Award, handed out Sunday night, is no small accomplishment. But the winners kept hearing one word in questions after the Globes: Oscar.

Many people look to the Globes as a preview of the Oscar race. Last year, Lord of the Rings was the big winner at the Golden Globes, and then several weeks later at the Oscars. In past years, it hasn’t been that easy to predict, and this year looks to be one of those years.

There was a clear “big” winner at the Golden Globes, but it didn’t dominate like LOTR did. The Aviator won three awards, including Best Actor for Leonardo DiCaprio and Best Drama. Million Dollar Baby earned Hilary Swank a Best Actress nod and Clint Eastwood the Best Director award.

Best Supporting Actor and Actress went to Clive Owen and Natalie Portman, respectively, for Closer.

They are all expected to be nominated- that’s a no-brainer. But who will win? The Globes did little to clear that up.

And an interesting point- in year’s past, nomination forms for the Oscars were due after the Globes were handed out, giving voters time to see how the Foreign Press measured the films. This year, they were due before the weekend.

Nominations will be announced in just one week, on January 25. The awards are in about 5 weeks, on February 27 in California.
