Amidst the mixed reviews Troy received when it was released in theatres last year, there were two consistent thoughts: the movie was too long (it’s over two and a half hours) and Brad Pitt’s backside was shown too much. Accept those two facts before the movie begins and Troy is a well made adaptation of the story of Iliad.
Pitt plays Achilles, the nearly immortal warrior. He views battles in a different way than the King of Greece but he is always ready to defend his fellow Greeks.
The King has wanted to invade Troy for what felt to him like eternity. When Prince Paris of Troy, played by Orlando Bloom, elopes with the King of Sparta?s wife, he finally has a reason to do so.
The Greeks depend on Achilles, and though reluctant at times, always finds the motivation to lead them. He in convinced the help the Greeks in the battle against Troy by understanding that the winner’s name will be remembered by generations after generation.
There’s nothing special, yet nothing wrong, with Pitt’s portrayal of Achilles. He is not given enough time to fully explore the emotional capabilities of the character, despite the movie being so long, yet still finds a way to build up the immortal persona after his first battle. Pitt should be applauded for his approach to the fight scenes?most of the time, it’s Pitt on screen, not a stunt double.
The extra features, which are included on their own disc, show the training and preparation Pitt endured to get into shape. In his most notable battle with Prince Hector (Eric Bana), Pitt remarkably does all his own stunts. The rest of the nearly one hour of bonus features takes a closer look at the making of the movie (set design, special effects, etc.), galleries, a historical view, and trailers.
