Toronto Indie Band Organizing Concert for Tsunami Relief

A Toronto band is organizing a benefit concert to raise money for victims affected by the Southeast Asian tsunamis. And despite the necessary costs in putting on such an event, The Oracy, a live instrumental progressive hip hop band, are making sure to maximize the money being donated.
“We have gone to all means necessary to ensure that there are no expenses associated with this show. In fact, every volunteer still has to pay cover,” says Amanda Zelina, who also goes by the name “Sphinx” when she raps and sings with The Oracy.
The event will take place Jan. 28 at The Reverb in Toronto. Besides a performance from The Oracy, there will be other live bands, dancers, and a silent art auction.
All proceeds will benefit the Canadian Red Cross.
Zelina and her bandmates have adapted the “do what you can” attitude that has swept across the world following the natural disaster that has left over 150,000 dead and thousands more homeless.
“When something as devastating as the recent Tsunami disaster occurs, one can?t help to take notice and do what they can to lend a hand,” she said.
The band decided to organize a fundraiser at their first meeting following the disaster on Dec. 26, and have received a great amount of assistance from volunteers.
“Everyone so far has been nothing but helpful, giving, and compassionate towards our endeavours to put on this fundraiser,” she said. “We have nearly 50 volunteers for the event: artists, musicians, promoters, graphic designers, scientists, teachers, you name it.”
