The big winner of this week’s box office battle is the latest film from Jim Carrey, “Lemony Snicket’s a Series of Unfortunate Events”

The film cost $125 million to make, and brought in $30.2 million in its first weekend in theatres.

Lemony Snicket is based on the children’s books by author Daniel Handler, who used the name Snicket as the author of the books. The movie features the first three books in the series. Carrey stars as Count Olaf, who battles orphans trying to defend themselves.

That was good enough to topple “Ocean’s Twelve” from the top spot. The movie with George Clooney, Julia Roberts, Matt Damon and Brad Pitt earned $18.2 to fall to second.

“Spanglish,” featuring Adam Sandler is his most serious role of his career, eared just $9 million to debut in third.

“The Polar Express” was in fourth with $8.5 million in receipts, followed by “Blade: Trinity,” which racked up $6.6 million.
