The enjoyment level of watching Mary Poppins as a young boy and now as I am in my 20s is remarkably similar.
Growing up, Mary Poppins was a movie I’d watch every week, singing along to the songs, laughing as Bert and the gang float to the sky, looking away when the children walk down the scary alleyway.
Now, watching it on DVD as “Mary Poppins: 40th Anniversary Edition” is released on DVD, I enjoy it almost as much, perhaps for sentimental reasons, but also because of the movie’s quality. There’s no point in analyzing a movie that is 40 years old, but the way the movie was put together was ahead of its time. The storytelling is superb, the acting remarkable? but these are things that were evident 40 years ago. Today, watching the DVD, digitally mastered, it’s striking at how clear and crisp the picture looks. The magic of technology is almost as mystifying as the magic of Disney.
Besides the movie, the DVD includes an animated show hosted by Julie Andrew (Poppins), an interesting musical reunion with the Andrews and Dick Van Dyke, a never-before-heard song, a game, and behind the scenes footage. For a movie that came years before the creation of the DVD, and the need for special features, the total package is impressive.
