Meet Filmore Slim – Toronto Indie Band
Filmore Slim has been on the Toronto music scene for the past three years, astounding fans with a refreshing combination of showmanship and songwriting that is often lacking in today’s rock/alternative genre. With their uniquely crafted blend of rock, pop and alternative styles, Filmore Slim’s music ranges from fast-paced rockers to softhearted, lyrically stimulating ballads.
The band – composed of Justin Abrams and Mike Levine each playing guitar and singing lead vocals, Josh Bader on drums, and Andrew Greenwald on bass – draws its musical influences from such groups as: The Beatles, Oasis, Nirvana, Bob Dylan and other songwriting visionaries. Filmore Slim has enjoyed success playing in venues all across Toronto’s indie music scene and can often be heard on stage experimenting with new sounds and styles that draw fans into the already packed venue just to catch a glimpse.
With their groundbreaking, masterful approach to songwriting, Abrams and Levine have developed into one of Toronto’s premier songwriting duos, with every song emanating originality and emotion. On guitar, Abrams evokes sonic images of Hendrix in his heyday. Combined with Levine’s strong vocals and Josh Bader’s soulful blend of meticulously crafted drum arrangements, Filmore Slim has an innovative sound that has come to define them as one of Toronto’s premier rock’n'roll bands. Rounding out the rhythm section is bassist Andrew Greenwald, whose approach to the base is reminiscent of a young Paul McCartney or John Entwhistle, given Greenwald’s incomparable ability to shape bass lines that are unforgettable to the listener’s ear.
With a vast repertoire of original material, Filmore Slim’s wide array of songs is pleasing to all listeners from a multiplicity of genres. Fast-paced, heavy rockers such as “Hard on Me,” “Poison In The Well,”"Out There” and “Photographs” compliment the extensive array of softer, well-crafted, revealing numbers such as “My Hands Are Tied,” “It’s Out of My Control” and “Stay,” exemplifying the dexterity of the songwriting and musical influences within the band.
It is no surprise that Filmore Slim’s audience continues to grow exponentially with each passing gig. Recent appearances at Toronto’s prestigious “El Mocambo,” the Mecca of venues amongst Toronto’s indie bands, have assured audiences that they are the future of rock music on Toronto’s often bland music scene. For any music lover, Filmore Slim is definitely a band to watch out for as they continue to please music audiences from all walks of life.
