Twelve years after its theatrical release, Disney’s Aladdin hits DVD shelves this week, and it was worth the wait. The two-disc set is filled with special features, music videos, and games.
The movie itself is enhanced with a 5.1 Home Theatre mix. It became a classic the first day it hit theatres and is a movie the whole family will enjoy. Robin Williams is just as good as the cartoon Genie as he is onstage doing his stand-up routines. There couldn’t have been a better choice for Iago than Gilbert Gottfried.
The soundtrack for the movie won Best Original Score at the Academy Awards in 1992. The Best Original Song was awarded to A Whole New World, which is redone by Jessica Simpson and husband Nick Lachey and included as a music video on the DVD. The “Newlyweds” stars are just as dynamic in their deliverance as the original. Another musical bonus is Clay Aiken of American Idol fame singing a “lost track,” Proud of Your Boy.
Rare for a cartoon, there are deleted scenes. Also featured on the DVD is a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the movie, and the option of watching the movie in “trivia mode” with secrets and facts popping up.
The kids will enjoy playing the games and trying to help Aladdin save Jasmine with the magic carpet. They’ll also love getting their fortunes told by Genie and singing along to the Aladdin songs by following along with the on-screen lyrics.
