As a member of the audience this Thursday night at the John Bassett Theatre, it was strange to hear silence as Jacob Hoggard was announced the next to leave Canadian Idol. Looking around at my fellow audience members, dropped jaws and wide eyes replaced the usual shouts of protest. Shock and disappointment seemed to overtake the roar of the crowd as Jacob took one final whirl as an Idol contestant, singing a competition favourite, “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing.” The other musical performances of the evening were also amazing.

Starting things off was one of last season’s most popular Idol contestants, Audrey de Montigny. She sang her new single, “I Keep Crying.” Audrey seemed stronger vocally this time around on the Idol stage. With a fabulous response from the audience, Audrey appeared rejuvenated and ready for the challenge her rising career will certainly bring.

The group performance of Peter Gabriel’s “In Your Eyes” was powerful and passionate, making for one of the best collaborations ever performed by the Idols. It was polished and allowed for each competitor to showcase their own strengths while contributing to the group’s beautiful harmonies.

Sadly, Canada must now face a show without the energetic young singer Jacob Hoggard. Jacob told his fans, “The end of this show is just the beginning for me. Thank you for your support.”

Canadian Idol will miss Jacob’s energy and enthusiasm. He helped to bring out the best in the other Idols and audiences have greatly enjoyed his work. So long Jacob, it’s been a great ride.
