Canadian Idol: Idols Sing Judges’ Picks

Posted by andPOP Staff on September 9th, 2004

Judges’ Choice Night on Canadian Idol meant sentiment and soul as Kalan, Jacob, and Theresa took one more stab at stardom Wednesday. Many famous guests were among the crowd, Sass had a whole new set of wacky comments, and Ben and John even had a hilarious competition over whose parents were coolest, but the most entertaining part of the evening was by far the music.

“If You Don’t Know Me By Now” was Jacob’s first song. He seemed to be holding back a little in this performance, but he still pulled it off. Jake said, “If people don’t vote for you they’ve got to be crazy.” On the contrary, Zack told Jacob, “It wasn’t bad, but it doesn’t show who you really are and that you really want this thing.”

Next, Theresa sang the famous “What the World Needs Now.” Although Theresa’s phrasing seemed a bit choppy, her sound was pretty and fresh. Farley said to Theresa, “I’m glad you opened up the way you did,” and Zack said, “That was good, but you’ve got to show people you’re the one.”

Third up was Kalan with U2′s “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For.” He sang with such passion, and emotion that it was impossible to find flaw in anything that he did on stage. Zack said, “That was awesome. You are awesome,” and stood up to clap for Kalan. Jake said, “That was the best thing I’ve ever seen you do.” Farley added, “You wanted this, and, baby, you just took it.”

Jacob’s second song was the upbeat “I Want You to Want Me.” Jacob was full of energy as he sang this one, clapping above his head, and getting the audience into his performance. He was himself on stage, which was really entertaining. Zack said, “You’re the only person ready to make a record.” Jake added, “You’re ready to entertain the world.” Sass commented, saying, “You’re my favourite Mexican jumping bean.”

“Ready to Love” was Theresa’s next song. Her tone proved unforgettable once again as she graced the stage with this soft, passionate ballad. Jake said, “You proved one again that no one on this show can captivate the audience, and be as vulnerable as you.” Sass said, “You have a huge amount of heart,” and Zack finished, saying, “When people ask me why I do this silly show, I’m going to say ‘Theresa Sokyrka’.”

The last, but certainly not the least performer of the night was Kalan with “Nature Boy.” He gave this performance everything he had, vocally and emotionally. The result was perfection. Farley said, “I’m so proud of you.” Zack touched his heart, saying, “There are no words. Thank you for being here in every way, shape and form.” Jake added, “That was absolutely special.”

It will be sad to see another talented singer say goodbye Thursday evening, and it’s hard to say who will leave at this point. Unfortunately, I think Theresa may go because she doesn’t seem to have as much fan support. With one more week to go, the stakes are raised, the show is more intense than ever, and Canada has the power to give one singer the opportunity of a lifetime.
