Fox was banking on Family Guy to take down the Olympics. While it didn’t do quite that well, the animated show, enjoyed by people of all ages, managed to get almost 5 million viewers and finish second in the ratings for Fox’s mini-marathon Wednesday night.

That’s just a finger compared to NBC’s man handling of the ratings, bringing in almost 30 million viewers to watch Olympic repeats.

The excitement of having Family Guy return to Fox, which cancelled the series about two years ago, was subdued, partly because reruns have been airing on other networks for months. However, this is a sign of things to come for Fox and Family Guy.

The network will start airing new episodes next year, perhaps as soon as spring as some reports have said.

The show picked up somewhat of a cult following when it was released on DVD, prompting Fox to reconsider their decision.
