‘Elvis Has left the Building’ Announcer Dies
Al Dvorin has left the building. The longtime announcer at Elvis Presley concerts, who coined the phrase “Elvis has left the building” died in a car crash in California. Dvorin was 81.
Dvorin was returning from an Elvis convention where he said the line in front of many Elvis impersonators. The driver of the car, Presley’s photographer Ed Bonja, missed a curve and the car swerved off the road. He was injured in the crash. Dvorin was thrown from the car and later died of the injuries.
As fans were waiting for an encore from Presley at a concert in the 1970s, Dvorin told the crowd that he would not be returning with the now famous phrase.
Presley never paid Dvorin for the phrase, something he reportedly was bitter about for years. He originally met Presley in 1955, through a connection with his manager.
