I just cannot understand for the life of me what all of the hype is about with regards to this particular film. True it was digitally shot, and the dialogue at times appears genuine and sincere thus developing a true sense of realism throughout, however, what exactly has made ?Open Water? the next ?Blair Witch Project?? Many critics have heralded this film as the best shark movie since ?Jaws?; I think to myself, ?Well, what is my other choice? ?Deep Blue Sea??? Not only was this film lacking in scares, but its ending was somewhat preposterous. Without giving away too much of the ocean flick, ask yourself this question: If you were stranded in the ocean, and there were several boats within your sight, would you not swim towards them in an effort to save your life? Our characters in this film obviously feel that those efforts are futile, so rather than make an attempt they decide they?d rather float to their possible imminent deaths. Hmmmm. Situations such as this makes one ponder over what they would do with a similar dilemma.
One element that I can say was positive was the exposure of gorgeous Charlize Theron-esque newcomer Blanchard Ryan. Her earnestness and intensity made the film watch able as she gave a powerful performance.
Bottom Line: Since ?Open Water? is only 1 hour and 19 minutes long, and for the majority it is the husband/wife floating for survival, there is little one can critique without revealing too much. I can say however that the film never loses its focus, and the overall look was impressive for such a small budget feature. Although creative and somewhat original, it will leave you with a newfound appreciation for the ocean, and the dangers that lay underneath.
