This Thursday night, elimination at the Canadian Idol competition seemed more difficult than ever. There were some lighter moments when the Idols performed their group number, consisting of Lionel Richie songs “Running with the Night”, “Dancing on the Ceiling”, and “All Night Long”. A guest appearance by Lionel Richie himself brought the crowd to their feet. He sang “All Night Long” with the Idols, and then serenaded the country with “Just for You,” his new hit single. Lionel didn’t disappoint fans. He still has the magic.

Unfortunately, the show did go on, and the results were announced. Shane, Elena, and Kaleb were this week’s bottom three. Shane was quickly sent back to the safety of the couch, followed by Elena, meaning Kaleb Simmonds is the third top ten competitor to leave Canadian Idol. (Final 6 pictured at right; Source: CTV)

Kaleb dared to be different, “real” in the judges’ words, and he did a fantastic job. However, the odds are against “different” in a competition looking for a pop idol. The judges recognized and praised Kaleb for who he is, but that wasn’t enough to persuade the country. Zack said, “Kaleb is the best R & B, Hip-Hop singer I’ve ever heard in this country”, and Farley once told Canada, “Kaleb sings like Miles Davis plays.”

Kaleb goes home tonight to face the reality of a lost dream and disappointed fans. Hopefully, he will understand how much viewers appreciate his artistry and believe in him. Sass advised, “Take your time and think about how you want to express yourself musically and know that Canada is watching.”

Before performing one last song on the Idol stage, Kaleb said, “I want to thank everyone who thought I had something to bring to Canadian music.”
