Is Fahrenheit 9/11 Eligible for an Oscar?
Michael Moore need not worry. Despite the fact that a television station in Cuba aired Fahrenheit 9/11, the movie is still in contention for Oscar awards.
According to Oscar rules, documentaries are not allowed to be shown on television or on the internet within nine months of its theatrical release to be eligible for awards. When a Cuban station aired the movie recently, some thought it made Moore’s film ineligible. However, the station aired it without Moore’s approval, meaning the movie can still win Best Documentary.

“If somebody steals your movie and puts it on TV, we’re not going to penalize you for it,” John Pavlik, a spokesperson for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, told Reuters.
The movie could also be up for more than just the awards in documentary categories. Some believe the movie is good enough to compete for Best Film, a rarity for a completely non-fiction work, though it’s debatable how true the movie is.
