Ja Rule was charged by Toronto police on Monday with assault causing bodily harm, stemming from a nightclub incident in June.
The rapper, whose real name is Jeffrey Atkins, was in court this morning in Toronto, but there is a publication ban.
He is scheduled to return to Toronto August 30. He was released on $10,000 bail.
Ja Rule signed autographs for fans waiting outside the court at Old City Hall, but did not speak with media or issue a statement. His lawyer told reporters that he hopes to settle this matter soon.
Police issued a press release earlier in the day, stating that Ja Rule turned himself into police voluntarily after flying in from New York. The charges are related to an incident at La Rouge on June 5.
Ja Rule was in Toronto for several weeks filming a movie and frequently appeared at nightclubs. He is no longer allowed to go to the downtown core unless he is working, as a condition to his bail.
50 Cent criticized Ja Rule for not being the “gangsta” he claims to be.
